Wall Street Gains Fueled by Declining Yields and Healthcare Sector Strength

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, U.S. equities closed higher, buoyed by a notable drop in long-term Treasury yields. The S&P 500 added 16.22 points, or 0.21%, ending at 7,707.98. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 119.65 points, or 0.22%, to finish at 53,463.05. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 41.38 points, or 0.16%, reaching 26,331.09. These gains marked the end of a three-day losing streak for all three major U.S. indices.

Wall Street rebounds on lower yields and healthcare surge
U.S. stocks gained as lower long-term Treasury yields eased pressure on major indexes.

A significant portion of the trading session was driven by movements in the bond market following the U.S. Treasury Department‘s announcement of increased liquidity support buybacks for longer-term debt. Starting September 9, the maximum purchase size will be raised to at least $4 billion per operation from $2 billion. The increase affects nominal coupon securities with maturities in the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year ranges. The department stated that these larger purchases will continue through November 4, maintaining high volumes of high-quality offers.

Following the announcement, Treasury yields declined as bond prices moved upward. The benchmark 10-year yield fell to around 4.65%, while the 30-year yield dropped to approximately 5.20%. On Tuesday, the 30-year yield had risen to 5.337%, its highest level since 2007. The decline in yields eased some pressure from rising borrowing costs, which had previously weighed on equities. This shift also contributed to Wall Street’s recovery from earlier losses this week.

    Healthcare Sector Provides Additional Support

Shares within the healthcare sector gained ground after Moderna and Merck reported promising late-stage results from a melanoma study. Moderna’s stock surged 177%, while Merck’s shares increased by 12.6% during trading. The Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial evaluated intismeran autogene combined with Keytruda post-surgery in high-risk melanoma patients. The trial successfully met its primary endpoint for recurrence-free survival, and also achieved a key secondary endpoint related to cancer spread prevention.

Several consumer brands also experienced gains following quarterly earnings reports. Estée Lauder’s shares rose more than 16% after announcing its earnings. Target and Lowe’s also saw increases after releasing their latest financial results. Smaller-cap stocks outperformed the major large-cap indexes, with the Russell 2000 advancing roughly 0.5%. These movements helped extend the market’s recovery beyond healthcare. Meanwhile, technology stocks showed mixed results, limiting the overall gains in major indices.

Major Indices Remain Down for the Week

Despite Wednesday’s rally, the main U.S. stock indices remained lower for the week ending at close. The S&P 500 was approximately 1% below its level from last Friday. The Dow declined about 0.5% over the same timeframe. The Nasdaq had fallen around 1.5%. The rebound came after multiple sessions where rising long-term yields pressured stock valuations and prompted a more cautious stance among investors across key sectors.

After Wednesday’s trading, the major averages remained solidly positive for 2026. The S&P 500 has gained roughly 12.6% year-to-date, while the Dow has increased about 11.2%, and the Nasdaq has risen approximately 13.3%. The session reflected a modest rebound on Wall Street, driven by falling Treasury yields and strong healthcare sector gains. Notable market influences during the day included the Treasury Department’s buyback announcement and positive results from the melanoma trial, which served as clear catalysts for the market’s movement.
