KINSHASA / RankWire.AI / – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported a total of 8,067 Ebola cases in its current outbreak. As of September 26, health officials have documented 3,901 fatalities, resulting in a fatality rate close to 48%. The outbreak has impacted 63 health zones across seven provinces, marking it as the largest and deadliest Ebola event recorded in the nation. The DRC Ministry of Public Health announced the outbreak on May 15, after laboratory tests confirmed the Bundibugyo virus as the causative agent.

DR Congo Ebola toll reaches 3,901 deaths and 8,067 cases
Health teams in DR Congo continue Ebola surveillance, testing, treatment and contact tracing.

This event represents the 17th documented Ebola epidemic in the country. The Bundibugyo virus is known to cause severe illness and spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. According to the World Health Organization, there are no licensed vaccines or approved treatments specifically targeting this Ebola strain. Response efforts have focused on surveillance, testing, clinical management, infection prevention, and contact tracing. Community engagement remains vital as authorities aim to identify cases early and connect individuals with treatment facilities.

Ituri continues to be the primary transmission hub, although cases have now been reported beyond that province. Infections have also been identified in North Kivu, South Kivu, Tshopo, Haut Uele, Bas Uele, and Sud Ubangi. By September 23, Ituri had reported cases in 28 of its 36 health zones, while North Kivu had confirmed cases in 16 of its 34 zones. The widespread geographic distribution has compelled health teams to maintain vigilant surveillance across urban, rural, and border regions.

Recent data indicates a decline in new cases from recent peaks

Recent reports show a reduction in both new infections and fatalities compared to earlier phases of the outbreak. Incident cases decreased by 20.3% over the last two 14-day periods, while deaths declined by 24.2% over the same timeframe. Despite this progress, transmission remains intense in parts of Ituri, where several localities continue to experience active spread. Health teams persist with testing, contact monitoring, and bolstering infection control measures at treatment sites and other locations managing suspected or confirmed Ebola cases.

By September 26, authorities had recorded 2,070 recoveries. Response teams continue to conduct laboratory testing, provide patient care, and monitor communities across affected provinces. Challenges such as delays in diagnosing some infections have hindered rapid patient transfer into treatment centers. Community deaths are still a concern, as they can occur before patients reach specialized care. Early detection remains crucial to minimize exposure risks for relatives, caregivers, and healthcare workers in contact with infected individuals.

The outbreak now exceeds previous records in DRC

The ongoing Ebola situation has surpassed the scale of the 2018-2020 epidemic, which ended with 3,481 cases and 2,299 deaths. Currently, this outbreak ranks as the second-largest Ebola epidemic globally, with the 2014-2016 West Africa crisis holding the record with more than 28,600 reported infections and over 11,300 fatalities. The size of the current outbreak underscores the exceptional severity of Ebola in the DRC’s extensive history of health emergencies.

Health authorities remain vigilant at border regions as the outbreak affects provinces neighboring other nations. Haut Uele is near South Sudan, while Sud Ubangi borders the Central African Republic and Republic of the Congo. Monitoring activities continue alongside contact tracing, testing, treatment, and infection prevention efforts. The latest data indicates a slowdown from recent peaks but confirms that transmission persists. With over 8,000 confirmed cases and nearly 4,000 deaths, this outbreak ranks among the most severe Ebola crises ever recorded.
