KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – The Alliance for a Safe Community in Malaysia has urged proactive, coordinated measures as El Niño intensifies throughout the Pacific region. Chairman Lee Lam Thye emphasized that readiness efforts should prioritize public health, water management, agriculture, and environmental conservation. He called on government bodies, businesses, and local communities to act promptly to prevent increased strain on vital services from rising temperatures and drier conditions. This appeal follows recent climate evaluations indicating that El Niño has already reached a moderate strength.

Malaysia strengthens El Niño readiness nationwide
Malaysia expands El Niño readiness across water, health, farming and fire safety.

On July 14, MetMalaysia announced that El Niño conditions remain moderate and are expected to continue until at least April 2027. The latest analysis revealed a weekly sea surface temperature anomaly of 1.3 degrees Celsius in the Niño 3.4 zone. The agency also projected that the phenomenon could intensify from October through December 2026, with the potential for strong or even “Super” El Niño states during this period. Public advisories were issued to stay updated through official channels.

Forecasts for Malaysia from July to December indicate a likelihood of below-average or slightly reduced rainfall in several regions. The most significant drops are expected in July and August, coinciding with the period when the southwest monsoon typically causes drier weather. Areas in southern Peninsular Malaysia, central and western Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are highlighted in the lower rainfall outlook. The forecast also links increased dryness and unregulated open burning to a heightened haze risk.

    Water resource and heatwave preparedness

National Disaster Management Agency has broadened its readiness measures for the hot and dry conditions associated with El Niño. Since February, it has conducted seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Additionally, three more series were planned to support rainfall and reservoir levels in affected zones. Fire and environmental monitoring teams have been instructed to oversee 83 locations at high risk of open burning.

The government has directed water authorities to identify dams requiring urgent repairs and to evaluate more groundwater sources for tube wells. Health and education sectors are ramping up public awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable groups and school communities. The safety coalition also advised reducing pipeline losses, expanding storage capacity, and formulating contingency plans for areas susceptible to water shortages. Furthermore, measures to promote efficient irrigation, provide technical assistance to farmers, and enforce stricter controls on forest and peatland fires are being emphasized.

    Public advisories and government surveillance

Lee Lam Thye highlighted that seniors, young children, outdoor laborers, and individuals with chronic health conditions should receive special attention. He also called for broader awareness campaigns focusing on water saving, fire prevention, and heat-related health risks. Citizens are advised to rely on official weather updates, including the myCuaca app, for real-time alerts and local conditions. The authorities continue to monitor temperature levels, drought severity, rainfall, air quality, and fire hazards nationwide.

The NOAA’s July assessment indicated a 97% probability that El Niño would persist into early 2027. It also estimated an 81% chance of a very strong event occurring between October and December. Malaysia’s official outlook remains cautious, noting that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are still possible during the southwest monsoon. Government agencies are actively preparing for issues related to water supply, fire risk mitigation, health communication, meteorological monitoring, and inter-agency coordination. All response plans are aligned with current forecasts and verified environmental conditions.
