BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – To enhance its efforts against Ebola, the European Commission has committed €2.1 million to purchase PCR tests specifically for the Bundibugyo virus outbreak. This initiative involves open-platform diagnostic kits that laboratories can integrate with their current systems. The procurement process received backing from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Shipments are expected to commence in August as health teams confront a significant outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and extending into neighboring regions.

European Commission adds PCR support for Ebola outbreak
PCR testing support strengthens the international response to Ebola in DR Congo.

The World Health Organization will facilitate the distribution of these tests via its Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics based in Dubai. From there, WHO will coordinate the deployment to various sites involved in Ebola response activities. PCR testing enables laboratories to verify infections accurately and support ongoing surveillance efforts around confirmed cases. Healthcare teams rely on these definitive results to determine patient treatment, implement isolation protocols, and conduct contact tracing. The current supply initiative strengthens laboratory capacity amid continuous monitoring of transmission across multiple provinces and health zones within the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Earlier, the European Commission allocated an additional €2.5 million for rapid molecular point-of-care tests and testing devices. These tools are intended to aid the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s regional response strategies. The total funding dedicated to diagnostics now amounts to €4.6 million, forming part of a comprehensive package of European support for nations combating the Bundibugyo Ebola crisis. This aid extends beyond diagnostics, encompassing medical supplies, preparedness measures, and public health resources aimed at bolstering the response efforts in affected and neighboring areas.

Testing capabilities expand amid a major outbreak

By August 12, WHO reported that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths. The outbreak had been identified across 54 health zones spanning six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this as the largest Ebola epidemic documented in the country. Continued transmission within interconnected geographical clusters has placed ongoing demands on surveillance teams, laboratories, treatment facilities, and local health services across these regions.

In its August update, WHO maintained a very high national risk assessment for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also categorized the threat level for neighboring countries as high, while the risk elsewhere remained low. Following a meeting of its International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on August 24, WHO issued revised temporary recommendations covering surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, and community engagement. Additional guidance addresses public health measures related to travel and large gatherings during the ongoing response efforts.

European financial aid for Ebola response surpasses €493 million

The European Commission announced a mobilization of €493 million to support emergency response measures, including vaccines, treatments, and health security initiatives across the Great Lakes and Uganda regions. European health agencies have also contributed to laboratory testing, surveillance, and preparedness activities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to assess the risk to the European population as very low. Ebola predominantly spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids, emphasizing the importance of rapid detection, safe clinical practices, and effective infection control measures to curb transmission.

The Bundibugyo virus outbreak remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern under WHO’s international health framework. Currently, no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for Bundibugyo virus disease. Authorities continue to rely on vigilant surveillance, swift diagnosis, patient isolation, clinical management, and close contact monitoring. The new PCR testing supplies enhance capacity for case detection and confirmation. WHO, Africa CDC, and national health agencies are coordinating their efforts to identify cases promptly and maintain effective public health measures in affected communities.
