KINSHASA, DR CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola crisis in DR Congo has escalated into the nation’s most extensive recorded epidemic. By July 30, authorities confirmed a total of 3,605 cases, including 1,587 fatalities. The case fatality rate was calculated at 44%. During the most recent full reporting week, 567 new infections and 296 deaths were documented, marking the highest weekly figures since the outbreak’s inception and indicating ongoing virus dissemination.

DR Congo faces its largest recorded Ebola outbreak
Health teams track Ebola transmission across 49 health zones in DR Congo.

The epidemic now affects 49 health zones spread across five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo. Within this period, active transmission was reported in 33 zones, which recorded 641 cases and 282 deaths. Ituri remains the most affected, accounting for 3,176 infections, representing 88% of the total national count. Bunia experienced the highest local case load, followed by Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Lita, and Nyankunde.

The World Health Organization assesses the risk within DR Congo as very high. It also considers the threat to Uganda and other neighboring countries as high. Conversely, the risk for the broader African continent and globally is deemed low. Persistent armed conflict, displacement, and frequent population movement continue to hinder efforts to control the disease. Healthcare teams are also challenged by damaged infrastructure, staff shortages, and restricted access to several affected communities.

Health teams intensify contact tracing and patient care efforts

A total of 17,863 contacts across the five impacted provinces have been identified by DR Congo’s health authorities. Response teams actively monitor 13,455 individuals, leaving thousands untracked. The outbreak has resulted in infections among 151 health workers and the deaths of 44, with 68 others having recovered. Authorities continue expanding testing, patient treatment, infection prevention, and community engagement. Initiatives also include supporting safe burials, transportation logistics, supply deliveries, and public awareness campaigns in areas with active transmission.

Bundibugyo Ebola transmits through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, organs, or contaminated materials. Symptoms typically appear between two and 21 days after exposure. Patients are not contagious before symptoms manifest. Initial signs include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, and sore throat. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. Rapid diagnostic testing, isolation, supportive care, contact tracing, and safe burials remain essential to limit further spread.

    Cross-border surveillance efforts remain vigilant

Designated as a public health emergency of international concern on May 17, the outbreak prompted the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to declare a continental emergency the following day. Uganda declared the end of its local outbreak on July 28 after 42 days without new cases. Nevertheless, health authorities continue enhanced surveillance measures due to regular crossings at the eastern DR Congo border. Ongoing screening, laboratory preparedness, and readiness measures are active in neighboring areas linked to the affected zones.

By July 30, authorities in affected nations confirmed a total of 3,626 cases and 1,589 deaths. DR Congo accounted for 3,605 cases, Uganda for 20, and France reported one. Recoveries included at least 651 patients in DR Congo and 18 in Uganda. Additionally, two patients in DR Congo were diagnosed prior to receiving treatment in Germany. The majority of infections and fatalities continue to be concentrated in eastern DR Congo, where surveillance, treatment, and community response teams remain actively engaged.
